About Laura De La Torre

I received a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and Environmental Design from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in Mexico City. I also did advanced studies in Architecture and Design in Buenos Aires. I recently studied for a Master's in Advanced Design at California College of the Arts, MAAD program Master in Advanced Design, Digital Crafts, at California College of the Arts, CCA. I complimented this Master's with a summer program at the Architectural Association in London. My architectural journey has taken me across the globe, from Mexico to Chicago, Buenos Aires, and the Bay Area. I've had the privilege of collaborating with renowned architects in Mexico, exploring entrepreneurship, and working independently. Notable projects include the Kuala Lumpur Towers with SOM and the Flamingo Sculpture Lighting Project with Schuler and Shook in Chicago. In Buenos Aires, I focused on developing shopping malls with Pfeiffer and Zurdo. In the Bay Area, I delved into K-12 projects and forensic architecture, honing my technical skills in detailing and envelope skins. During my independent ventures, I designed residential medium and high-end projects, including a 1650 sq. ft house in Albany, CA, which was published in the SF Chronicle. In my most recent experience, I had the opportunity to work as a Studio Director in a firm in SF, where I developed leadership skills with three interns under my leadership; my entrepreneurial experience contributed to the studio's business development in addition to leading the projects from developing the proposal to complete documentation. While working independently and with others, I created my ability to work in interior architecture by assisting interior designers who are known designers in the Bay Area. My independent work includes participating with AIA as Chair of Woman in Architecture, Lecture in Mexican Muralism, and LatinX in Architecture AIA—research and lecture on new materials and technologies and teaching assistance for an urban project in Chicago. These opportunities and collaborations have been pivotal for my professional growth, involving leadership, research, and participation with clients and teams.Software that I am most familiar with currently: Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Enscape, D5, Adobe Creative SuiteSoftware that I have used in the past: Archicad, Unreal, MayaAdobe Creative Suite

  • Ogle Architecture & Design
    Senior Designer
    Ogle Architecture & Design Jul 2023 - Nov 2023
    Berkeley, California, Us
I worked directly with the principal in developing the Schematic Design of three new high-end residential projects. The project in San Francisco was a remodel of a 3000 sqft home in Buena Vista Park. I re-designed the new spaces for the living room, the kitchen, the main bedroom, and the bathroom. The project in Berkeley consisted of a reconstruction and remodel of a house in Berkeley Hills, approximately 4000 sqft. I created the project's concept and direction and led junior designers in the consecutive phases of the project. I envisioned the floor plan, worked on the mood board, furniture direction, and selected and developed the FF&E list of finishes and furniture. In addition, I contributed to the project's business development by bringing two new projects to the studio.
  • Panafold
    Studio Director
    Panafold Dec 2019 - Apr 2023
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
While at Panafold, I used my senior experience in architecture and newly acquired knowledge of prototyping and new technologies to lead the teams in developing several design and architectural projects. I assisted in the studio's business development, developed client relationships, and prepared proposals and budgets for several projects along the Bay Area, including commercial interior, residential, and hospitality. I led a small team of three interns during the pandemic, where I served as a mentor and guide during the different phases of the project delivery. Among our projects, we envisioned and designed the interior offices and showcase area for a prominent wine seller in San Francisco. Other relevant projects included remodeling a residence in San Jose, a residence in Pleasanton, ADU in the Ghetto Gourmet in Berkeley, and the interior design of several luxury homes in collaboration with known interior designers. We also consulted for a project in Puerto Rico and Norway. In addition to our daily work and routine, we participated in two international competitions.
  • Design@100%
    Principal
    Design@100% Feb 2013 - 2019
During this period, one of my career's most creative and experimental times, I became entrepreneurial and worked and developed my own business. The most relevant project was the conversion home of a small 600 sqft bungalow into a 1600 sqft modern home in Albany. The project was successful and published in the San Francisco Chronicle. Some of the most relevant characteristics were the creative use of colors and unusual materials, such as LVL beams for the stairs and cement board panels in the facade. I also learned how to manage all aspects of residential design, construction administration, client management, and business development. I also had the opportunity to consult on materials for a project in Berkeley; with this client, we used sustainable materials such as sorghum waste for the cabinets; there was also a big emphasis on textures. I consulted for the development of a big kitchen in Montclair, Oakland. I develop plans and designs for small projects, like bathroom designs for houses in Piedmont. I design and build several ADUs for clients in Berkeley and Albany. I consulted on a residential project in a small town in Guatemala, where I mainly researched and proposed principles of self-sufficiency and environment design, as the town lacked primary resources.
