Working at the pointy end of the R&D process, I lead teams of scientists and engineers to rapidly and quantitatively conceive of, develop and de-risk new product platforms. Activities include the development of raw material cost models and mapping of process mass flows, intellectual property review and identification of potentially relevant IP, researching and conceptualizing novel metabolic pathways, developing sound project timelines and managing the team’s time and efforts to efficiently execute on project milestones and deliverables.

Working for Logos Technologies I performed a myriad of tasks ranging from basic bench science, using techniques including synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and biochemistry, to managing large-scale production facilities to organizing teams of scientists towards a single focus. The overarching goal was to produce third-generation biofuels and other green chemicals from renewable, cellulosic biomass in an economically feasible manner. I served as the Principal Investigator on several federally and internally funded projects.

Worked at the interface of academic and industrial science as a principal investigator leading a multi-agency cellulosic biofuels program. Activities included basic bench science, mentoring students, coordinating pilot scale facilities and ensuring on-time delivery of product.

Led project to determine the underlying molecular and biochemical mechanisms for lipid biosynthesis and storage in Rhodococcus opacus PD630. Work resulted in the identification of a novel lipid storage system which has since been identified in other industrially relevant storage polymers. Identified a novel genetic switch which regulates the transition from vegetative growth to lipid storage in a variety of organisms. Served as the principal liaison between the Sinskey lab and industrial partners.

Identified and characterized the novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa toxin Cif as well as its cognate transcriptional regulators CifR and CifA. Additionally, I studied the role of carbon catabolism in biofilm formation in P. aeruginosa. Authored 2 first-author journal manuscripts, one first-author textbook chapter, 3 second-author journal manuscripts and 2 third-author manuscripts
