KEY EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE:• 20 years of experience in conflict resolution, elections, and good governance within the context of democratic transition in Africa. • Conference moderator and reporter, professional mediator, respected pastoral counsellor, and seasoned trainer. (Much of the early experience in conflict mediation and peace-building were as a minister in South Africa during the struggle against apartheid. Served variously on public and NGO boards which sought to address the institutional and social impediments to full citizenship for all South Africans and to democratic governance)• Democracy and Good Governance in South Africa serving as Director of Idasa. During this period, Idasa broadened it programming to respond to the need for post-apartheid South Africa to build democratic institutions and strengthen peace building within a diverse society. Idasa also continued to expand its work and reputation beyond South Africa’s borders. • Experience outside of South Africa has been in the Great Lakes and Southern Regions of Africa. (Moderated three major conferences on peace and proliferation of small arms in the region. In Ethiopia, conducted a one-month training programme on international and national human rights instruments. Also conducted two ten-day programmes for Namibian officials and NGOs on decentralization and development. In Zambia, designed and implemented a one-month mentoring programme for human rights organisations in Zambia.) • Establishment and management of country program offices in Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa.
