David Marlett serves as the Managing Director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University. He has previously completed an eight year term as Chair of the Department and holds the IIANC Distinguished Professorship. David also served as the Faculty Director for the Wilson Scholars Program, the premier scholarship program at the university. The position required recruiting high achieving students, designing program activities for current students, and managing funds to run the program.David is committed to service to the university, profession and community. He is a long time member of the Appalachian State University Athletics Council, chaired the CPCU Loman Advisory Council, and is on the Board of Directors for InVEST. David and his wife Emily have fostered a dozen children over the last twelve years and work closely with the state agencies.Prior to entering the doctoral program at Florida State University, David worked as a commercial lines underwriter for USF&G in Tampa. While in graduate school, he completed his dissertation titled Evaluation of Legislatively Mandated Residual Market and Catastrophe Financing Programs. This continues to be his main area of research. He has published over twenty articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents on the topic. David was appointed by the Speaker of the North Carolina General Assembly as a member of the Joint Select Study Committee on Potential Impact of Major Hurricane on the Insurance Industry in North Carolina. In 2015, David completed his sabbatical in Christchurch, New Zealand where he studied the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes and analyzed their national disaster insurance program.
