I am a partner in the international law firm Simmons & Simmons, specialising in brands, trade marks and intellectual property. I am a solicitor-advocate and a deputy district judge. I am also a member of the editorial board of the leading IP journal JIPLP, a speaker at the Informa Cambridge IP Summer School and a respected writer and blogger (you can find links to over 70 of my publications below).I help clients assert and defend against assertions of trade marks, design rights and copyright, amongst other IP rights. I have litigated at all levels in the UK, from the UK Intellectual Property Office to the UK Supreme Court. I have also fought cases at the EUIPO, the EUIPO Board of Appeal and the General Court of the EU.I work every day in the world of trade marks. I help clients come up with usable brands and protect them in the UK, Europe and around the world. I clear brands and manage trade mark prosecution across multiple jurisdictions. If you have a trade mark question, I can answer it.I work in a variety of sectors, in particular the media, technology, finance and fintech sectors. To give a flavour, I have advised clients on intellectual property rights in relation to everything from cartoon characters to whisky bottles, clothing, knitting needles, lingerie, soft drinks, telecommunications services, television programmes, films and hotels. I am a proven innovator – I developed “Simmons & Simmons Translator”, a software service to help clients deal with EU trade mark law reform, which was unique in the industry and recognised by awards from both the Financial Times and The Lawyer magazine (see details below). I am also a member of the judiciary of England and Wales, sitting as a Deputy District Judge in both the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court and the English County Court.
