About Dmitry Lapshin
I am an Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. My expertise spans over computational and experimental research, educational, and entrepreneurial activities.Computation skills:- Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, and liquid-solid interfacial systems (Gromacs package).- Molecular simulations using the coarse-grained SAFT-γ Mie force field (Gromacs package).- Monte-Carlo simulations of CO2 adsorption in MOFs (RASPA package).- Mean-field density functional theory calculations of fluid sorption in model pores (Fortran).- Free energy calculations using the MBAR method.- Identification of truly interfacial molecules (ITIM, Pytim).- Geometric pore structure characterization of model pores (PoreBlazer).- Work in Unix/Linux type environment.- Knowledge of key operations of High-Performance Computing.- Analysis of simulation results (Python, MDAnalysis, Mathcad, VMD, RasMol, Origin).Experimental skills:- Material synthesis: common analytical techniques used for the synthesis of adsorbents based on MOFs, silicas, activated carbons; mechanochemical synthesis and modification of inorganic oxides, hydroxides, and salts; incipient wetness impregnation method.- Material structure: powder x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy.- Material composition: common analytical methods, potentiometric titration, elemental and thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, IR-Fourier, and Mass spectroscopy.- Adsorption properties: nitrogen physisorption at 77 K; water vapor physisorption at 298 K.These skills and experience allow me to look at the same problems from different perspectives, and effectively communicate results to and plan research involving both groups. My research is versatile and finds application in gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, electrochemistry (battery cells), liquid-liquid extraction, hydraulic fracturing, and extraction of oil and gas.As a dedicated university educator, I have experience in designing and teaching courses for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. I am committed to promoting STEM education among high-school students by giving lectures on "The Future of Chemical Engineering with AI".My scientific achievements have been recognized by multiple awards and scholarships listed in my CV (can be sent upon request).
