Bespoke personal advisor, licensed psychotherapist, sex therapist, ordained minister, and writer David Ortmann is one of the premier contemporary thinkers on human sexuality, power and the interplay between mental health, mindfulness, and transcendent growth. The dissolution of the USSR and the forced "outing" as queer - both in his final year of study - aborted that dream. In 1991 LGBT people were barred from the U.S. Foreign Service. Despite the trauma of losing both his career ambitions and his family to homophobia, David supported himself by modelling, acting, and making burritos in Dupont Circle. In 1992, he moved to former Czechoslovakia to teach Theater, English as a 2nd Language, and helped lead grassroots conflict mediation trainings and interventions during the Czecho-Slovak national split. David's written work pops up in anthologies of fiction, non-fiction, academic and popular presses; he's well-interviewed and quoted by GQ, Allure, Glamour, the Huffington Post, Vice News, Men’s Health, Nylon, Women’s Health, Playboy, and Parents magazines. His 2016 address to the inaugural Alternative Sexualities Conference at the Jerry Orbach Theater in New York City was called "the bravest, most controversial presentation of the day" by NYLON.His award-winning first book, SEXUAL OUTSIDERS (Rowman and Littlefield 2012), co-authored with the great Richard Sprott PhD, is regarded as the 1st sex-affirmative psychological analysis of Kink and BDSM. His 2021 contribution (Chapter 13) to THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SEX THERAPY (Guilford 2020) marked the 1st time Kink and BDSM were featured in the 50-year history of this venerable go-to manual for therapists and was named ASSECT's 2021 Book of the Year.Known for his straight-talking compassionate vibe, David remains a sought-after guide for those seeking inimitable, sex-positive guidance and creative interventions for healing, integration and liberation.
