Assistant Professor in the Molecular Therapeutics Program and Cancer Epigenetics Institute at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA. We are currently looking for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to join the lab! The Whitaker lab investigates pressing questions at the intersection of DNA damage, transcriptional regulation, and DNA repair. Ongoing projects in the lab aim to elucidate the mechanistic details by which the repair of oxidative DNA damage in “knotted” (e.g. G-quadruplex) DNA within gene promoter regions regulates the transcription of key tumor suppressors and oncogenes. The long-term goal is to identify molecular targets that can be exploited to improve cancer therapies. The primary techniques utilized in the Whitaker Lab include structural biology (X-ray crystallography, Cryo-EM), nucleic acid enzymology, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, as well as human cell-based assays.As a scientist, I feel a sense of responsibility to not only contribute to our greater scientific knowledge but also to promote public awareness and understanding of science in my local community. This has included participating in community events such as March for Science, and working with local organizations such as ACS Cancer Action Network, ACS KC Relay for Life, and KC RiBS to speak directly to the public and even state legislatures about my research. Interested in pursuing similar opportunities in our new home of Philadelphia.
