Support included horizontal and vertical geometry, maintenance of traffic designs, and plan preparation.

I spent the majority of my career at HNTB working on design-build projects in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. Design-build projects that I worked on include:US Route 35 in West Virginia, I-495 & I95/395 Express Lanes in Virginia as well as US 158, US 13, and the Goldsboro Bypass design-build projects in North Carolina. I performed many tasks in drainage design including culvert, storm sewer, roadside ditch, and stormwater management pond designs. I was also involved with the inspection team. I was involved on a few bridge inspections and took on a task lead role for the drainage inspections on the West Virginia Turnpike (or main client). Each year, we were responsible for inspection several thousand drainage elements along the 88-mile stretch of roadway. The inspections were visual and we noted any serious defects that may require repairs in the immediate future or in the coming years. Each year a large report is submitted to the client for review and determination of upcoming regular maintenance or contract work.

I worked with Aker for a short time once returning home to West Virginia. I had only experienced highway design in my previous position and Urban, Ltd. in Virginia and wanted to give structural engineering a chance before I decided my ultimate career path. At Aker, I was involved in a few projects: (1) a relocated a manufactoring process at the GE Plastics plant in Washington, WV that involved relocating pipe feed lines and equipment to a new location in the plant (2) a rigging setup for a retrofit at the Kraton Polymers Plant in Belpre, OH and (3) the modeling of a foundation for cooling towers at the Longview Power Plant in Morgantown, WV. In my short run of Structural Engineering, I determined that it wasn't the career path that I wished to take on. Instead I decided to return to highway/drainage design with HNTB.

My engineering career began with Urban immediately after college. At Urban, I was a member of the growing transportation team. I was involved on 3-4 projects during my tenure at there - 2 of the projects of which I completed a majority of the work under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. At Urban, I was introduced to some highway design including horizontal and vertical alignment layout as well as superelevation design. I was also introduced to culvert, storm sewer, and roadside ditch design for the first time outside of college. I decided to leave my position at Urban to return West Virginia.
