As ReadyRoll became strategically important to Redgate's DevOps story, there was a need to scale the development team within the UK-based office. At this point, I shifted into a product consultant role in order to:• Assist the development team with a refactoring effort, a pre-requisite to integrating ReadyRoll with other products in Redgate's Compliant DevOps offering. This involved assessing the risk of hundreds of incremental code changes and provide advice to the development team on how to proceed • Use my product and subject matter expertise to assist high-value customers with adopting DevOps practices for their database assets (e.g. setting up the product for local development, configuring of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines, etc)• Outline out a vision for the product roadmap that melded the db change management story with the db provisioning story, including the production of a proof-of-concept integration• I also worked with the Visual Studio team at Microsoft on including ReadyRoll as part of VS2017

Following the acquisition of ReadyRoll in 2015, I joined Redgate (UK) and continued to promote and guide the direction of the product while working as part of a remote development team. Internally, I worked to spread the message of safe database deployments, particularly within the sales division. Externally, I co-hosted a number of webinars, spoke at industry conferences and continued to write technical articles for the company blog, as well as those of our partners (SimpleTalk, SQLServerCentral, Octopus Deploy).

Database change management automation tool for Microsoft SQL Server, launched in 2012 and acquired by Redgate Software in 2015. Roles and responsibilities:• Lead a team of 4 software developers/release engineers, providing mentorship, performance planning/reviews and technical leadership • Worked with development and operations to establish a continuous integration and automated deployment pipeline• Worked with infrastructure teams to design and provision virtualised testing environments • Facilitated communication between developers, infrastructure engineers and DBAs, to help design QA environments around system requirements• Worked with the DBA team to establish trust around the automation of SQL deployments• Worked with the DBA team to establish provisioning and re-provisioning processes for populating test environments with fully sanitised copies of Production data• Prepared runsheets for and facilitated the release of Production deploymentsAchievements:• Shifted from a completely manual runsheet-based release process, to fully automated releases of all application and database components. • Moved away from shared-environment based development, where all developers would share a single SQL Server instance, to private, fully provisioned, isolated environments where developers could develop and test their changes across the whole application stack in private without impacting others. • Successfully scaled up from single-threaded Dev/UAT/Staging/Production pipeline to the ability to develop and test concurrent units of work in parallel to differing release schedules (e.g. weekly/monthly releases vs ad hoc patch releases). • Shifted from a lawless Production environment where any developer could release any change at any time and interfere with the running of live systems, to full separation of duties, where the infrastructure team would perform all code releases and developers only had access to their own dev environments. Released a number of small apps under my own brand, including StyleMaker, a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) editor, ColorMaker, a webpage colour scheme designer, and ProFormer, a webform data collection tool. All developed using Visual Basic 4/5/6 for Windows.StyleMaker was the first product of its kind, as HTML editors in those days had little or no support for CSS. It was listed in Windows Magazine's Top 100 Shareware Apps and featured in technical books such as FrontPage 98 Bible and the XML handbook.
