The Nuclear Information Section (NIS) is located in the Department of Nuclear Energy of the IAEA. As a Section Head, I led, managed and coordinated work of the International Nuclear Information System (INIS), IAEA Library, the IT Systems Development and Support Group (SDSG), and International Nuclear Library Network (INLN).The NIS objectives were to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; to increase awareness in IAEA Member States of the importance of maintaining efficient and effective systems for managing information resources on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; to provide information services and support to the Member states and to the Agency; to assist with capacity building and training.The role of INIS, the world's largest repository of 5 million publications in the field of nuclear science and technology, was to collect and process nuclear literature published in IAEA Member States; and preserve 'grey' literature, such as documents, reports and other publications. The IAEA Library core functions were management of internal and external Library information resources; provision of Library information services and information support to the Agency and the Member States; promotion of information exchange, cooperation and resource sharing between nuclear information centers and libraries worldwide.The Systems Development and Support Group (SDSG) supported and maintained existing NIS computer information systems and applications, as well as improved their functionality and developed new solutions according to INIS and IAEA Library requirements.The International Nuclear Library Network (INLN), coordinated by the IAEA Library, i.e. the Library of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is a consortium of nuclear libraries and knowledge centres. The Network seeks to promote the exchange of nuclear information and to strengthen strategic partnerships amongst members.
