I began my fellowship at the Berkman Center with ProjectVRM , a research and development effort supporting the creation of tools that provide customers with ways to be both independent of vendors, and better able to engage with vendors. VRM development today involves dozens of organizations and hundreds of many individuals, mostly in.

As a fellow at CITS I am working on two projects. One is toward the establishment of a research organization dedicated to understanding public infrastructure — and in characterizing the Internet as a form of public infrastructure (rather than as a private business, or a set of them). The other is writing a book about the Internet titled "The Giant Zero."

This is the development project I launched at the Berkman Center in 2006, and continue to run. There are now dozens of VRM development projects in the works.

I've been on the masthead of Linux Journal since 1996, and its editor-in-chief since 2017. Though still viable, the magazine ceased subscription publishing in August 2019. I remain involved, however, in keeping its archives permanently alive at linuxjournal.com while continuing to operate as a full-time journalist.

The Searls Group is my consultancy. Most of my public speaking that's not for Linux Journal is under the auspices of The Searls Group.The business is decended from Hodskins Simone & Searls, the advertising agency I co-founded in 1978. The Searls Group began as the marketing and PR wing of HS&S. In 1993 it became independent.

I co-founded HS&S as an advertising agency in North Carolina, in 1978, with the title Creative Director. It grew to become one of the top high-tech agencies there by the early '80s. In 1985 we opened an office in Palo Alto, and the company moved there in 1986, after which it grew to become one of the top agencies in Silicon Valley. When it branched into PR.

While I made money selling advertising for WDNC radio (the local newspaper's flagship radio station), i supplemented that by working as a disc jockey and transmitter maintenance engineer on weekends. WDNC was a top forty station at the time.

I came to the PRF as an editor of Theta, its magazine, and moved from there to marketing and fund-raising, while continuing to write. The PRF was directed by William R. Roll, best known for his work on poltergeists, and was located on the campus of Duke University. It was spun out of the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man, which was founded by.

While I was employed as a salesman for the station, I also wrote and performed as "Doctor Dave," a humorous character that stayed on the air, and in the station's arts monthly, The Guide, until 1980 (as a labor of love — the pay was close to nothing). My nickname, "Doc," is a fossil remnant of Doctor Dave.
