Human Factors Engineer, Group ManagerGood And Not So Good Human Factors In Design Group Oct 2011 - Jun 2012Alexandria, VaManages a group on LinkedIn where members can submit discussions about their everyday encounters with both good and bad examples of designs where the human was or was not accounted for. Also blogger at www.whodesignedthisthing.com where personal stories and pictures are highlighted to show just enough of the technical issues or accolades in design of common consumer products, signage, interfaces, web pages, etc., to get the word out about human factors engineering. Mostly meant to be an academic resource, contributions for guest posts are ALWAYS welcome and you will get full credit for your post idea.

Senior Research AssociateTexas A&M University Jul 1994 - Aug 1999TxDOT and other Federal transportation agencies rely on Texas Transportation Institute for its research facilities (once a training base during the war with a 7000 foot runway that makes a great "track" to conduct research) and its amazing staff of researchers from civil, traffic and human factors engineering, not to mention their fabulous simulation capability. While a researcher at TTI, I examined a new font for overhead guide signs on freeways - Clearview. It was a "field" study of epic proportions! The other research associate and I, along with grad students made the signs ourselves, by rolling on the letters in different fonts. We looked at older drivers and younger drivers, daylight and nighttime driving. It is one of my proudest moments and the study that I am the most thrilled to be a part of. The results notwithstanding, the experience was worth millions in how to conduct a large scale field study! -
Lecturer, Industrial Engineering And Educational Technology DepartmentsTexas A&M University Jun 1994 - Aug 1999Taught IE430, Human Factors Engineering, to the undergraduate students in the Industrial Engineering Department. It was then a mandatory course (90s). Also taught Engineering Economy to lecture halls of students! Also taught a course in the ED TECH department on computer based instruction. Where I caught the academic bug - teaching at TAMU. -
Doctoral Student, Full Department Of Education ScholarshipTexas A&M University Aug 1989 - Jul 19945 years of blood, sweat and tears. Amazing faculty advisors and course work! What an experience and such hard work. Loved the research opportunities, laboratory courses and learning more about basic IE also. -

Graduate Research Assistant For Rodger KoppaTexas A&M Transportation Institute 1989 - 1993Taught the only human factors course available for IE majors at the undergraduate level. Learned so much from Dr. Koppa and other HF professors, like Dr. Jerry Congleton and Dr. Newton Ellis. This is where I first caught the teaching bug, which I never regret!

Engineering Research PsychologistBrooks Afb, School Of Aerospace Medicine Aug 1987 - Aug 1989USAFSAM expanded my research on the human in aviation. I worked with one of the lions in the field - Dr. Kent Gillingham on spatial disorientation research and learned so much about G-induced loss of consciousness. I performed research in one of the first vertifuge simulators where we could induce spatial disorientation to create all the classic illusions that all too often led to accidents and loss of life of our Air Force pilots.
