Working at the Bank of Canada offered an opportunity to apply my knowledge of macroeconomics. During my time at the Bank, I conducted market research and applied this in both a policy and academic context. My position also allowed me to learn from more experienced economists on how to approach novel policy questions and on how to conduct research. I was also responsible for the charts and tables in the global section of the Monetary Policy Report, which required familiarity with macroeconomic data of major overseas economies.Responsibilities: - Created charts and provided fact-checking for the global section of the Monetary Policy Report, the Bank of Canada’s flagship publication.- Authored briefing notes on commodity market developments and presented these to managing directors.- Created briefing packages by replicating existing econometric models, such as options-pricing models and models that decompose oil price movements into changes arising from supply and demand.- Collected data using multiple databases such as the Bloomberg Terminal, FAME and Haver Analytics, presented these in graphs using Excel (including Pivot Tables and macros), and summarized relevant background reading to support daily needs of department and division members. - Conducted academic research in commodities market topics. I contributed by identifying appropriate data sources, conducting statistical analysis and learning about econometric methods and presenting results. Currently co-authoring two papers for publication.
