During my time as an Employee Relations Coordinator at Copper River Seafoods in Naknek, Bristol Bay, Alaska, I assisted in HR functions for over 130 employees, including payroll, documentation, and administrative tasks. Initially recruited as a line processor, I traveled up to Bristol Bay, Alaska in May of 2020 with the intention of learning more about the food production industry. Shortly after arriving, I was able to negotiate with the head engineer a role change from the processing plant to the engineering department. From there on I became the main tender for incoming fish arriving from their respective fisheries. As a person with no prior experience in an industrial setting, the learning curve for working with high-risk, heavy machinery was steep. I was able to learn quickly and excel at operating the necessary components, troubleshoot daily problems, manage product quality, and adapt to the inconsistent delivery and processing schedule. Additionally, I began to apprentice directly under the head engineer in matters of fabrication, mechanics, commercial refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical. This role maintained a rigorous pace often requiring morning to overnight shifts and a seven day-a-week schedule that consisted the entirety of a season. Each season lasted for four months.
