Trained as a chemist (Bsc) with biochemistry as specialization (MSc, University of Utrecht 1973). First publications were typical biochemical, dealing with the isolation, purification and amino acid sequencing of the enzyme phospholipase A2 from the horse. After that followed some courses and short internships to acquire skills in clinical chemistry, hematology and parasitology. Worked then 3 years (1976 - 1979) for the Ministry of Health of the R. P. Mozambique in the Central Hospital of Maputo (>1000 beds) as director of the clinical laboratory services and blood bank. Developed a curriculum for medical laboratory technicians. Back in the Netherlands started at the University of Utrecht, departments of Veterinary and Biology and the Agricultural University of Wageningen, Animal Sciences Group, Fish Farming section with a PhD study on surface antigens of the fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida and the development of a fish vaccine (1980-1988). In the line of vaccine development switched to human vaccine development at the RIVM (Netherlands National Institute for Health & Environment) and worked from 1984-1988 on the development of a human vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis. From 1988-1989 worked at the WKZ Children hospital in Utrecht in the dept. of immunology. Started in 1989 with teaching at the HZ University of Applied Sciences, Vlissingen and in 2005 also at the University College Roosevelt (UCR, formerly RA), Middelburg until 2012. At the HZ university lectured in subjects as clinical chemistry, biochemistry, biochemical and DNA techniques, immunology and ecotoxicology. Became in 2003 bio-safety officer (BSO / BVF) at HZ university. Participated in the curriculum development of Chemistry & Life Sciences education, Water Management (Aquatic Eco-technology) at the HZ university and developed a course for laboratory skills training for the UCR.Retired as active instructor and lecturer in 2012.
