These are all things we would want in a media professional, but what sets Domenica apart is first, that she is achieving these critical victories at such a young age, and while attending school, and second, that she is also contributing her own stories and perspectives as a young American Muslim woman. Domenica’s articles for IPS have ranged from clever and incisive commentary about current social justice topics, to relatable personal stories from her life growing up as a Muslim girl in New Jersey. I believe that both Domenica’s professional talents and her own unique voice and platform are crucial to the growing movement against Islamophobia. On a personal level, she is the most responsible and hardworking young person I have ever supervised. She never misses deadlines, and deftly handles tricky interpersonal dynamics with grace. She has earned the respect and praise of senior issue experts who have been with our organization for decades. She’s also a natural mentor, and for this reason we’ve asked her to supervise a junior staffer and an intern this year. Right now, our country is facing a crisis of anti-Muslim hate and violence, and we need strong organizing and positive media work to turn the tide and shape public opinion.
