Dominique Coronel is a Chicanx activist, community organizer, and entrepreneur. As Board of Director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), Dom helped lead the youth movement to legalize cannabis in Illinois with a focus on social equity. They are a spokesperson for the DePaul USA Dax program for homeless college students, appearing on various networks including CBS Sunday Morning, Vice News, NBC, Chicago Sun Times, and Aljazeera, to advocate for homeless college students in Chicago and throughout the United States. They have resolved to spend their life advocating for change: change to a system that snatched their parents away and left them homeless for much of their youth, change to the exclusions from the formal economy that people of color have too long endured. Coronel’s adult life and career have been an exercise in transmuting pain into power.Coronel has been featured in High Times Magazine for their cannabis advocacy and has been trained by Brandon Banks, former CEO of a major cannabis company in Colorado on cannabis breeding, genetics, taxonomy, varieties and cannabinoid profiles. They have also been trained on cannabis marketing and cannabis industry macroeconomic principles, particularly with regard to different strains and product brands. Additionally, they have been trained in the effect of different product modalities and how to provide safe consumer education, including but not limited to instructions for safe consumption of edibles and storage of cannabis products. Previously, Dom spent 8 years working in electoral politics as a fundraiser, field organizer, and chief of strategy for local, state, and federal campaigns.

The Foundation is backed by his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Stanford University, and the University of Virginia Contemplative Center. Chosen for my social innovation project, which seeks to bring Ashtanga yoga and meditation to the most vulnerable communities in Chicago to help transform lives and combat health disparities and collective trauma in various ways. Through the lens of transformative justice and by focusing on inner-city and urban youth, people who are incarcerated, and all those who experience various forms of pain and suffering due to poverty and violence; this project seeks to combat those realities by providing open-source, accessible, and culturally relevant materials to directly impacted communities in classrooms, prisons, and in economically disadvantaged areas. By partnering with various organizations to facilitate Ashtanga yoga, meditation, and other healing methods while spreading awareness of these practices through the curriculum and materials that highlight the benefits and transformational potential these sacred teachings hold. This project will have a profound impact on marginalized communities, helping to heal the mind, body, and spirit while teaching sacred lessons that will promote external peace and cooperation at an interpersonal level within Chicago communities and beyond. -
