To reduce water-born disease rates and improve health, I designed and implemented a study to examine water quality fluctuation and water decision-making in areas of heterogeneous water infrastructure in developing cities. The study took place in the cities of Fada N'Gourma and Pouytenga, Burkina Faso. The information gathered via this work will enable efficient use of public and development funding to reduce water-borne disease rates by informing strategic infrastructure investment and public health program targeting.

Lab of Nicolas Chevrier, Ph.D.To deconvolute the mechanisms underlying immune coordination in the skin, I created a comparative dermal infection model based of three pathogens (C. albicans, S. aureus, and Modified Vaccinia Ankara) and skin dissociation protocol. Using these tools, I investigated the cellular and gene expression changes that occur post infection in skin immune cells. My work produced insights that contribute to the basic understanding of how the skin immune compartment functions at the single-cell level. Lab of Aric Rogers, Ph.D.Using the model C. elegans, I devised a method by which to conduct tissue-specific gene expression analysis to help elucidate the function and activity of genes of interest. To do so, I attached tissue-specific promoters to GFP-tagged ribosomal transgenes and microinjected them into the gonad of C. elegans, enabling monitoring of de novo mRNA translation occurring in precise body regions and cell types. Results from this project initiated a pipeline whereby numerous strains of transgenic worms can be rapidly and efficiently created in order to help elucidate mechanisms controlling mRNA translation important for regulating longevity and aging.Skills: C.elegans husbandry; microinjection; PCR; fluorescence microscopy
