Professor Donald S. Burke, MD is Dean Emeritus and Distinguished University Professor of Health Science and Policy Emeritus at the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also co-founder and former President of Epistemix, Inc., a startup company spun out of his university epidemic modeling research. Over the span of his exceptional career at Walter Reed, Johns Hopkins, and Pittsburgh, he has led public health research programs “from the bench to the bush” world-wide. He has authored over 320 scientific articles on prevention and control of epidemics of global importance, including HIV, influenza, flaviviruses, hepatitis A, and coronaviruses. His citation ranking is in the top 1% of all infectious disease experts world-wide. Burke was a pioneer in the One Health movement linking animal and human health, and was the first to predict the epidemic risk to humans posed by animal coronaviruses. More recently he has published seminal research on the contagion-like dynamics of the US drug overdose epidemic. He is recipient of the John Snow Award for Epidemiology from the American Public Health Association, the Ashford Award of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Langmuir Lectureship of the American Epidemiological Society. Burke was elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, received his BA from Western Reserve University, and his MD from Harvard Medical School. Burke and his wife of 53 years, Jane, live in Pittsburgh. They have two daughters and two grandchildren.
