Moves and sets controls such as valves, switches and levers to direct the flow of petroleum products and control variables such as temperature, pressure, and level. • Makes regular rounds of assigned unit to verify safe and efficient operating conditions, including the inspection of piping, heat exchangers, pressure vessels & reactors, heaters, and various types of rotating equipment. • Follows Operating Procedures and/or safe work practices to start-up, shut down, or bypass process equipment and units.• Reads flow indicators, temperature, pressure, and level gauges, records and/or communicates information about refinery processes with appropriate personnel. Takes immediate action as warranted.• Samples liquids and gases, and tests samples for such characteristics as temperature, PH and color.• Determines malfunctioning processes and equipment by observing local indicators or by interpreting warning signals. Reports, troubleshoots, and/or corrects process and mechanical problems.• Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as lubricating equipment, and notifies maintenance of problems needing more attention. • Controls maintenance activities in assigned area. Communicates with Maintenance personnel, conducts gas tests, isolates equipment, and issues work permits to ensure repair and maintenance activities can be safely completed.• Is responsible for reporting and responding to emergencies, such as fires or loss of containment, in assigned area.• Operates and maintains safety equipment, such as fire monitors, fire extinguishers and self-contained breathing apparatus• Maintains/controls equipment and materials associated with operating the process unit to ensure an orderly, safe, and environmentally compliant work environment.
