Starting in 1998, I became involved in online affiliate marketing as a part-time enterprise. While I was attending college, working at GE, and later Varden Technologies, I had a thriving part-time business planning, developing, and launching a myriad of small, focused internet properties in upward trending sectors (although at the time, the entire Internet was an upward-trending sector).In June 2005 through the end of 2009, I took leave from Varden Technologies to develop these online enterprises even further. During this time, I focused on designing and creating a large, extremely complex network of affiliate marketing and lead generation sites focused on quick-decision consumer marketing purchases. As initially a one-person show, relying only on a few virtual assistants as well as small staff of 1-2 local assistants, I was responsible for all aspects of architecture, software development, database administration, technical support, search engine optimization, online and offline marketing, lead generation, and business development.The business model for this network was to focus on organic search engine marketing leading to landing pages and direct CTA to affiliate partner properties where I would be paid via commission on a per sale or percentage basis.During most of this period of time (during the last few months, I did acquiesce), I did not pay a single cent in online advertising, and developed a network of sites which at its peak generated over 4 million unique visitors each month.By the end of 2009, a majority of the assets were sold or scuttled, as I decided to return to consulting. However, the lessons learned of having to be a complete self-starter have driven me in my current career ever since.
