My biggest advancement working in this position was using Python extensively. Mostly I extended my Linux knowledge and built a few racks of Dell and Sun systems. In the end the funding for our office changed (they got rid of the part timers) and we parted ways, but the experience was a great contrast compared to AMD, where this was an academic institution primarily using free ($) solutions, and AMD used many non-free license solutions.
This position exposed me to many issues that companies deal with when their systems must integrate with the PSTN, as well as introducing me to terms like LEC, LERG, SS7, etc.This was a simple support position where I answered phone calls and customer e mails. We provided dial up mainly to rural customers, and the position afforded me an hourly wage while being able to work on school work and also play with some of the systems we employed.
This was the first real job opportunity I had post-military. This was a co-op position through UT Austin.Primarily we provided direct user support to the design engineers at the AMD design centers in Austin.
