Donald Melvin Temple (DT) is a civil law practitioner, legal educator, mentor, and activist. He received his BA from Howard University in 1975, Juris Doctorate from the University of Santa Clara School of Law in 1978, and an LL.M from Georgetown Law Center in 1981. Between 1980 and 1989, DT worked in the U.S. House of Representative and served as Senior Counsel to the Committee on the District of Columbia, and Counsel to its Subcommittee on Judiciary and Education. In 1989, he ran for Congress. In 983, DT founded Congressional Black Associates. In 1991, DT started Temple Law Offices which presently handles civil rights, commercial, administrative, foreclosures, and civil fraud cases, Over the course of over 30 years of private practice, he has successfully litigated significant civil rights, federal law, and common law claims against local, state, and federal governments, private businesses and major corporations including, but not limited to, Eddie Bauer, American Eagle, the Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission, Southern Management, Citibank, and the International Association of Retired Persons. In 1997, DT coined the term “consumer racism” and won a landmark jury verdict in the US District court in Maryland. He’s also won race discrimination jury verdicts in DC and Maryland federal courts. In 2018,DT won a significant whistleblower verdict against the D.C. government in the US District court for the District of Columbia and joined a team that attained a Supreme Court reversal of a major DC Court of Appeals ruling that affected tolling and statutes of limitations. DT has also obtained significant 42 USC Section 1981 rulings in D.C. federal courts. DT has worked closely with black law students and young lawyers for more than forty (40) years. In 1979, he founded the Charles Hamilton Houston Law School Preparatory Institute (“CHH”), a seven-week summer preparatory program for entering law students. Now in its 42nd consecutive year, CHH has prepared over 600 students for matriculation in over fifty law schools.DT’s recent commendations include the National Conference of Black Lawyers’ 2020 Lawyer of the Year, the National Bar Association’s (NBA) 2019 Heman M. Sweatt Award, and the 2018 Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association Lawyer of the Year. He’s also received the NBA’s Gertrude E. Rush award; Washington Bar Association’s Ollie Mae Cooper award, and the National Black Law Student Association’s Cora T. Walker award. He is the proud Dad of Imani Temple and Caira Temple-Moody.
