The world is a cyber war zone! The hackers are becoming more clever on how they attack and what methods they utilize. At the same time, the information security industry is also becoming better and utilizing new methods of monitoring, detection and responding.Technology is changing the landscape of business, we are seeing more and more companies becoming digitized. Being a fully digital company means that data so important to the success of the business is now even more available from many different platforms and locations. Data is moving and this presents a paradigm shift by the information security professionals.We can no longer concentrate solely on the network devices that host data or try to protect the organization from a breach. Information Security professionals need to add the skill set and knowledge to protect data in motion. The data is needed for business to be successful and grow, data is being shared and the workforce is global requiring access to this data. However, the data still needs to be protected.The information security professional must also become a business professional. Our programs need to be more aligned with the business than we have ever been. We must look at the metrics we provide business and make sure the metrics provide data that will help the business grow and make informed decisions. We need to learn to never say no but need to learn to work with business to figure out how to progress securely. We have to learn to say yes.I know Gartner has done quite a bit of research on these topics I discussed above and many information security professionals may already be conducting their programs with a similar mind set. I know I will ensure all my programs now and in the future will be tied directly to the business. What, this means though is that our charters and strategies must reflect exactly how we plan to do this and that business must be involved with the plans even if just approving.
