The role that I performed within Abbott Nutrition was to support the engineering department on a day to day basis as well as the site’s overall goals for continuous improvement. In supporting the engineers in the department I worked on the design of parts and assemblies using Solidworks, drafted and processed quality documentation such as Validation Change Requests (VCR) and Installation/Operation/Production Qualifications which are used to validate new designs and design changes. I also carried out a number of experiments such as tensile testing on the feeding tubing used in the product.Aiding the site’s goal of continuous improvement involved generating and implementing ideas through the ideas system which logs ideas that employees generate. Many of these ideas are generated by the General Machine Operators (GMOs) and are routed to the relevant department to implement. Many ideas lead to projects for the interns on-site.My role in the department helped to speed up various aspects of day to day work by working alongside other engineers. This included roles such as:• Liaising with the purchasing controller and Vendors in retrieving quotations and ordering parts• Using Solidworks to design and produce engineering drawings for parts • Creating and editing documents with Microsoft Excel and Word. • Conducting analysis on assembly scrap, bad parts and design modifications• I also undertook machine improvement projects.
