I went from graduate school to Fortune 500. Landing a job at a prestigious Fortune 500 company was a dream come true for a young graduate like me. I was eager to climb the corporate ladder, make a name for myself, and achieve all the success I had ever imagined. But life has a way of surprising us. I left Fortune 500 for an $8B quasi-government healthcare company, believing that this new opportunity would bring even greater prospects. Two years into the job, despite liking my supervisor and having achieved some level of success, I found myself deeply unhappy. Something was missing, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It was during this time that my stepmother encouraged me to embark on a journey of personal development. Little did I know that this would lead to a profound transformation in my career. Through personal growth and self-discovery, I had the privilege of meeting a CEO of a middle-market company in upstate NY. This encounter changed the trajectory of my life, and I stepped into the role of a coach to the CEO. Since then, I've had the opportunity to coach and develop thousands of leaders across the globe.I believe that if leaders are willing to shift their focus to becoming better humans, it will ultimately lead them to become better leaders. Today's leaders face a unique set of challenges, and my diagnosis is that many of them have a bias for action, which can hinder their effectiveness in various aspects of leadership and performance. The prescription for improvement is to shift from a bias for doing to a bias for being. This shift in perspective will lead to enhanced performance in areas of importance to each specific leader and their teams. As for the future of leadership in my expertise, it's clear that we are entering an era where leadership is no longer purely tactical. Leaders now desire more from those they lead than just instructions on how to perform their job. They seek leaders who have a genuine concern for humanity. To be influential in the worlds they lead, leaders must first understand themselves and their own human condition. This self-awareness will enable them to connect with and inspire the leaders they guide. The future of leadership is about fostering a deep sense of humanity and empathy within the corporate world, creating a positive ripple effect that reaches far beyond the boardroom.
