I'm working at the Department of Industrial Engineering with a research grant co-financed in the frame of an European Project concerning the microbial methane oxidation and odours mitigation by means of biofiltration systems (LIFE RE Mida Project - Innovative Methods for Residual Landfill Gas Emissions Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions - LIFE14-CCM_IT_000464). My research activities, started in July 2011, deal with waste management covering waste characterization and waste management technologies (landfill, compostng and anaerobic digestion). My main research issues are: landfill gas emissions, environmental impacts and technologies for impacts minimization, anaerobic digestion and energy production from waste, life cycle assessment of waste management technologies and systems.

I'm a consultant in a research group with a remarkable experience especially in the field of energy recovery from landfill gas, energy production from municipal organic waste through biological processes and material and energy recovery from waste. The main research issues are: experimental methods for monitoring and measurement of fugitive landfill gas emissions both in atmosphere and soil compartment in order to control environmental impacts; study and research of innovative systems for environmental impacts mitigation of industrial plants, especially for waste treatment plants; energy consumption optimization in industrial processes and research of energy conversion systems with low environmental impact; modelling of gas dynamics into the atmosphere through physical and numerical simulation of the tracers’ diffusions, with particular reference to fugitive gas emission and odorous compounds emissions from landfill and composting plants; modelling of biodegradation dynamics of landfill and anaerobic digestion systems through numerical simulations, pilot test and industrial scale studies; energy characterization of organic substrates through biomethanation test in batch reactors (Biochemical Methane Potential, BMP test) and in continuous anaerobic digesters (CSTR); study and evaluation of the biological stability of organic matters as compost from source-selected organic fraction and compost from mechanical biological treatment plant, determination of the Dynamic Respirometric Index (DRI) through respirometric test and self-heating test; research of innovative systems for the enhancement of biomethane and biohydrogen production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste through substrates pretreatment; application of Life Cycle assessment (LCA) to waste management end energy conversion processes.
