Since its founding in 1976, The Midwood Development Corporation (MDC) has responded to changing community needs and issues. When the agency began, the neighborhood was plagued by illegal drug activity. MDC was instrumental in helping resolve it. Later, MDC moved into housing development and preservation. As community needs changed, MDC responded with new programs. Today, MDC programs include housing services for renters, tenants and home owners; expansive youth programs; supported employment and recreational programs; and commercial revitalization.MDC has been hosting an annual street fair, the Midwood Mardi Gras, since 1976, and has been publishing the Sentry newsletter since 1978. MDC was instrumental in forming the district-wide Midwood Merchants Association (MMA). While at MDC, Don established Project SWEEP, a supported employment program designed to assist individuals with disabilities to build careers while improving commercial strip environments, and Project CONNECT, an effort that bridged access to after-school programs for youth with developmental disabilities and youth who are deaf. Don's work here built bridges between residents, business owners, and religious organizations; increased MDC's service effectiveness; and more than doubled MDC's annual revenues.
