Due to a rare eye disorder (acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy) I have retired from the pharmaceutical and Internet marketing industries. I greatly enjoyed my 21 years as a pharmaceutical sales and marketing professional. Launching orphan drugs to treat rare diseases was my passion. Developing educational tools to improve diagnosis and to improve quality of life for patients and caregivers was extremely rewarding. Throughout my career I always strived to give back to patient communities. In 1998 I became a founding Board member of the Shy-Drager Syndrome / MSA Support Group, now the Multiple System Atrophy Coalition. During my 24 year tenure on the Board I served in many leadership positions including long stints as a defacto, volunteer executive director and 12 years as Vice Chairman. In these roles, I led the organization's transition from a small support group into what is now an influential national rare disease organization with global impact. Annual revenue grew from approximately $15,000 per year to $1.5 million and the organization has now funded over $3 million in research grants. As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I plan to continue serving as an advocate for rare disease patients and caregivers. I will also be available as a consultant (to the extent my vision allows) offering strategic/marketing advice for rare disease nonprofits and small businesses start ups..
