Oct 2018 - Present

Chief Strategy Officer

Strategy was crucial in bringing a digital marketing agency working with Google Ads, Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, MailChimp, SEMrush, and other tools from startup to scalability in just under 2 years. I targeted four areas in a set of digital strategy initiatives:Reporting – I simplified key performance indicators to avoid “over-measuring”, creating a minimum spanning set of KPIs suitable for internal and client reports. Then, I mapped those KPIs into fact sources, fact names, and transforms driving developer requirements for a new reporting implementation.Messaging – Every engagement starts with aligning objectives, messaging, and media. Introducing the Messaging Architecture helped convey positioning, value drivers, and key messages for clients. Content – Once the Messaging Architecture is established, monitoring alignment on the awareness / interest / desire / action (AIDA) framework helps guide content creation.SEO – I connected technical SEO tactics with content strategy, using analytics to determine topics and keywords with the biggest impact in organic lead acquisition (not just impressions or traffic).

Oct 2016 - Aug 2018

Content Strategist, Founder

Left2Myowndevices

The name for Left2MyOwnDevices came from my magazine column on mobile device design and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology. In 5 years, I did a lot of B2B strategy and storytelling work on those topics with clients – most of it under NDA and ghostwritten. Three outcomes I can show here:I blogged for SemiWiki.com for three years, earning a reputation for deeper research and original thinking. SemiWiki.com also published two books I co-authored: “Mobile Unleashed” as a somewhat-short history of Arm processors in mobile devices, and “Prototypical” chronicling the rise of FPGA-based prototyping for SoC design. My public speaking highlights included a presentation on “The Internet of Trust and a New Frontier for Exploration” at IEEE EDPS 2016, and moderating an Open Source IP panel at the Design Automation Conference 2016.I was the evangelist for the Avnet Embedded Software Store, helping grow both the vendor roster and the reader audience by 2x in the first year of coverage.

May 2011 - Nov 2016

Editorial Director

Phoenix, Az, Us

When I joined the Embedded Computing Design staff, it was clear from chatting with prospects we were missing major swaths of the embedded computing market. My first step as Editorial Director was redefining coverage of the magazine to "silicon, software, and strategies for embedded devices.” I set out on a virtual PR tour using one-on-one calls, trade show meetings, and webcasts socializing the idea. That evolved into the concept for Left2MyOwnDevices, a section focused on application segments including smart energy, mHealth, the IoT, Android, microcontrollers, and RTOS technology.

Oct 2009 - Apr 2011

Marketing Professional, Co-Founder

Embedify

Embedify has close ties to VITA, the trade association representing VMEbus single-board computer and system manufacturers. At the time, VITA was undergoing a shift from parallel to serial bus technology with developments such as OpenVPX. I helped design a new brand identity package and website supporting the new messaging. I also used the Pragmatic Marketing framework extensively as the guiding methodology for other strategic marketing engagements. These included a pre-acquisition due diligence analysis with a long-range product forecast, market assessments for hardware and software clients, and content pieces including articles, websites, and white papers – again, almost all under NDA.

Feb 2005 - Oct 2009

Director Of Product Marketing

Tempe, Arizona, Us

I’m thankful to Motorola for launching my marketing career and am very proud of what my teams and I accomplished during my journey there. Highlights from three roles I held:While in the field as an application engineer, I created a seminal piece of competitive analysis. I compared our flagship product to the best product our primary competitor had. My analysis found worldwide use among our sales and marketing teams and set the competitor back for an entire product development cycle. In marketing product management, I oversaw 10 successful single-board computer product launches, including VMEbus and other form factors. These included a first for Motorola: products based on Intel processors, where I had to build trust between former combatants and overcome significant sales force resistance on both sides. Moving into the Director of Product Marketing role overseeing the entire product roadmap, my team grew our business unit revenue from $270M to $450M in three years, thanks in part to major wins at Xerox and Data General (EMC). I applied business intelligence tools in forecasting and cost reduction learning curve analysis. Before it was called digital marketing, I oversaw definition and launch of an e-business strategy. I expanded a core team of web developers into a full 15-person team with editors, project managers, architects, business analysts, and creatives. We built a robust website and hosting infrastructure supporting 50,000 visitors per month, along with intranet sites and e-business applications integrated with our Oracle ERP instance. I coded a customer satisfaction survey application for post-sales support calls and oversaw development of an order status application for our channel partners based on a RosettaNet PIP. Our digital transformation efforts saved over $2M of expenses.
