Dong-Joo (DJ) Kang started his career at KERI (Korea Electro-technology Research Institute) in 2001. KERI is one of government funded research institutes specialized in electric power industry and smart grid. As a researcher, he has worked on many government funded projects related to electricity market and smart grid technologies: restructuring and deregulation of electric power industry, economic feasibility assessment on power plants & transmission construction projects, power system and market analysis based on S/W simulation, ICT & cyber security issues in cyber physical systems, overall strategies and business model development in smart grid industry, etc. During the last 5 years in KERI, he joined international collaboration activities titled ISGAN (International Smart Grid Action Network), one of initiatives in International Energy Agency. He led the Annex 2 (Working Group) in ISGAN, which was about smart grid case studies from 2011 to 2016 until he left KERI. One of his strengths is the multidisciplinary backgrounds with electrical engineering, finance engineering, cyber security, and business majors: he has a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, a Ph.D. in business and a Ph.D. Candidate in cyber security. He also received 3 master’s degrees with electrical engineering, finance engineering, and MBA. Based on his multidisciplinary backgrounds, he has been trying to be a connecting hub of the social network composed of different fields and experts. After 15 years of working for KERI, he moved to Busan Bank in BNK financial group, the 5th largest commercial bank in Korea. He worked for the bank as credit and technology analyst for the loan services to SMEs. He took a role of assessing the technology value a company holds in combination with the financial status of the company. And he also prospected the macroeconomic trends of many industries which would affect the bank’s profitability. In 2016, he moved to the startup industry. He involved in building a new startup as a co-founder and joining in established startup companies as a board member and CTO. He wanted to experience real business practices. In 2018, he established his own company as a founder in March of 2018 and has managed so far. It is basically consulting and R&D based firm working in energy and security industries. He is also developing new business related to open collaboration platform, community, and education platform. The company name, “Connectalyst”, means “Connection + Catalyst” pursuing to build an expert community based social collaboration platform.
