CEC is recognized for delivering knowledge, innovative design solutions and integrated expertise in the primary practice areas of civil engineering, environmental engineering and sciences, ecological sciences, waste management and water resources.As Survey Practice lead for CEC’s Pittsburgh office, I work directly with office personnel and fields teams providing technical oversight, mentoring and project management. Our largest area of practice is related to the natural gas industry, including boundary and topographic surveys for design and acquisition purposes for pipelines and well sites. We also perform ALTA/ACSM Land Title surveys and topographic surveys for commercial properties and design/development projects.

Director of Surveying for Sanchez & Associates, P.C. an MBE/DBE firm located near O’Hare airport in Chicago. Projects include both Phase 1 and Phase 2 related Surveying services for the Illinois Tollway, the City of Chicago, and the Illinois Department of Transportation, District 1. Other projects include surveying services for Metra and other various topographic and boundary survey projects. Primary responsibilities include business development, client contact, boundary reconnaissance, research and calculations, preparation of statements of interest and proposals, project cost estimates, scheduling, and contract negotiations.

Managed projects located in both Chicagoland and the Quad Cities area. Responsibilities included business development and client contacts, preparation of statements of interest and proposals, project cost estimates, scheduling, contract negotiations, and staff coordination. Also responsible for Quality Assurance/Quality Control, establishing project procedures, and ensuring final product conforms to local and statutory requirements. Obtained significant experience with Microstation and Geopak CAD/Design software. Primary clients included Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Tollway, and Catholic Cemeteries of the Arch Diocese of Chicago, as well as various other private sector clients. Represented Ament, Inc. as a member of the Illinois Tollway Liaison Committee for American Council of Engineering Companies. Position eliminated due to budget and workload projections.

Managed survey department operations for the Chicago and Collinsville (St. Louis Metro Area) offices. Responsibilities at EDI were general management of the department, including preparing contracts and proposals, marketing and client relations, developing standard operating procedures, QA/QC, and staff training and management. Obtained Federal Security Clearance for a control and mapping project for the Chicago Federal Center. As a D.B.E./M.B.E., EDI provided services as sub-consultant to such firms as HNTB, CTR, CH2MHill, V3, CDM to name a few, as well as a prime consultant on many premium projects, including pre-development work on the largest urban solar power installation in the world, located on a former environmental “brown site”. Clients include City of Chicago, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, the Public Building Administration, CTA, The Illinois Tollway, O'Hare Airport, Illinois Department of Transportation, and various other municipal and private entities. Received a competing offer from Ament, Inc. and left on good terms.

Founded Crossmark Surveying, LLC with the recognition of a decline in municipal and residential private-sector development. The role as a small business owner included all facets of business development and management, and plenty of sweat-equity as is common with start-up businesses. The opportunity involved tasks as varied as business card design to learning the technical operations of the latest robotic and GPS equipment and data collection platforms. Other tasks included website design, marketing, field collection of data, and set-up of all CAD and business software. Produced a monthly company newsletter, which gained the attention of the editor of American Surveyor Magazine, resulting in a nationally published article on the subject of contingent professional fees. The Crossmark Surveying target market was commercial development. Projects included a 400 Acre boundary survey with wetland locations in Lake County, commercial ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys in McHenry, Kane and Cook County, and residential surveys in McHenry, Lake and Cook Counties. Other various projects included retaining wall locations for structural design, FEMA elevation certificates/LOMA, and topographic surveys for civil engineering. Although the commercial market outlasted the residential and municipal market forecasts, it too finally declined, causing me to seek other employment in the Spring of 2008.

Department/Project manager for branch office located in Huntley, Illinois. Primary contact with Del Webb Communities/Pulte Homes for their 6,000 unit community development. Later operated as a facilitator between branch offices and departments. Responsibilities include municipal plat reviews and consulting, business development/marketing, QA/QC, project management and department planning. Project manager for a multi-year system-wide contract with the Illinois Tollway. Developed the company QA/QC Plan for the Illinois Tollway project that received an exceptional 100-percent compliance in an independent audit. Became proficient with Autocad Land Development Desktop, Microsoft Word and Excel and Powerpoint software. Became familiar with ISO9000 documentation requirements and developed survey and control requirements with associated QA/QC checklists for the Illinois Tollway in their use for all projects. Involved in marketing for company at the annual ILGISA Conference, staffing the conference booth as well as leading technical presentations on control requirements and project procedures for GIS mapping development. Provided quality control management and review for a variety of projects, and multiple clients. Provided QA/QC plat review for land development and route acquisitions as a member of a consultant team contracted to fourteen municipalities and other agencies, including the Illinois Tollway, Illinois Department of Transportation, the City of McHenry the Village of Lake in the Hills and the Village of Mundelein. Obtained 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard certification. Obtained professional licenses in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Left on excellent terms to return to self-employment in 2007.
