Key focus was working with grassroots community groups to build power through redistricting. Hired a demographer to map communities. Attended national conferences. Produced educational materials, incorporating relevant state and federal laws. Achieved significant successes in Florida, New Orleans and Texas, overcoming major challenges. •Legal Highlights: Co-Counsel in 2013 NC voter suppression lawsuit (Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, 14th and 15th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution) - NC NAACP v. McCrory; Co-counsel in 2012 Ohio provisional ballot lawsuit (Equal Protection claim) – SEIU v. Husted; Co-counsel in 2012 Texas photo ID lawsuit (Voting Rights Act of 1965 - Section 5 claim) – State of Texas v. Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr. •Leader, Ohio Voter Protection Team (2004-Present). Successfully identifying and removing barriers to the ballot. Cultivated relationships with statewide elected/election officials. Managed a results-focused in-house and field staff team.

Highlights Continued:•Legislative Advocacy - Successfully advocated before federal and state legislatures for removal of structural barriers that deny or impede the right to vote of people of color in Louisiana, Ohio and New Jersey. Provided substantive analysis of legal and policy issues to elected and appointed government officials engaged in election reform. Secured bi-partisan support for election reform. oOhio - In 2008, prior to the November general election, uncovered the potential of 600,000 Ohio voters being removed from voter rolls without notice or hearing. Under significant time pressure, met with community partners and Boards of Elections. Convinced the Secretary of State to issue a Directive to the 88 County Boards of Election, preventing this violation. Received positive national media attention.oNew Orleans, Louisiana – Deployed to New Orleans six months after Hurricane Katrina to guarantee that voters displaced by hurricane could participate in the mayoral election. One of several founders of a Voting Rights Initiative. Ultimately sought relief in federal court. Court awarded expanded absentee voting opportunities. Developed strategies permitting voters to use fax, Federal Express and busing, maximizing voting participation. Personally supervised efforts in Houston, largest out of state location.
