The PI Quality Assurance organization is a shared organization across most of Personal Insurance. In my role as Senior Director I was responsible for evolving several application centric QA teams into a Centralized QA team, while at the same time transforming/maturing many of the organization’s QA practices. The Management Information Department for Personal Insurance at Travelers consists of a combination of our PI Data Warehouses, our Data Marts, and our Business Intelligence applications. The technologies in use range from DB2 – Teradata (on the database side), Cognos and MAS (for Data Marts and Reporting), and .Net & C# for the development of Business Intelligence Applications. As the Director of Quality Assurance it was my responsibility to create a Quality Assurance Team in an area that had previously been tested by customers and internal BA’s. For this effort I built a team and led them to define and implement QA practices, transition, QA work from SA’s and BA’s to our team, and to expand the visibility of Quality and Testing Practices across the organization. I was responsible for the recruiting, management, and development of staff, as well as pioneering the utilization of Onshore and Offshore vendor resources (The team eventually grew to more the 60 resources). I also focused the team on the effective utilization of automation in a Data Warehouse setting. This was a challenging assignment that required extensive partnering and influencing skills in order to be successful. My performance in this role led to an opportunity to lead the entire Personal Insurance QA organization.

In this role I provided Quality Assurance Leadership as well as the practical application of Testing Skills for a specific project in the Personal Lines Management Information area. This was a high profile project and I was contracted to manage the testing effort in order to reduce risk to both the quality of the project as well as to the delivery timeline. My major deliverables for this project were test planning documentation (Test Strategy and Test Execution Plan), review and streamlining of test cases, the roll out of a robust defect management process, and the oversight of the test execution phase of the project. In addition I created an automated framework that decreased test validation time from 9 person days to 3 minutes. The project was delivered on time with excellent quality. At the end of this project I was asked to take on two more efforts, one for controllable income reporting, and one for written production, both with similar deliverables and similar results. The quality of my work on these efforts ended with a job offer to join the leadership team for the PI Management Information Team.

Performant, a Bellevue, WA startup, was founded in June, 2000 to create sophisticated J2EE Deep Diagnostics tools based on an innovative application of Java bytecode rewriting. Mercury Interactive Corporation acquired Performant's technology and team in May, 2003 in order to accelerate Mercury's entry into the J2EE tools market.As the Manager of Quality Assurance I was recruited to re-organize and direct a QA team that was not performing as expected. In this role I educated the team in QA Best Practices, built a strong relationship between QA, Requirements, and Development, and successfully turned around the performance of the team. My day-to-day responsibilities included Personnel Management, Test Planning, Test Authoring and Execution. I worked at a senior level with the Director of Development, the Senior Architect, and the Functional Analyst on tasks associated with the overall development lifecycle, customer and field support, project planning, and strategic decision making. My team was responsible for the complete testing (Functional, Failure & Recovery, Performance & Scalability, Stability, and Platform Certification) of our Deep Diagnostics application as a standalone application in multiple complex J2EE environments. The team was also responsible for working with offshore teammates in the testing of product modules and their integration with other Mercury Products.

In this role, I successfully led a Test Automation Team that was responsible for the execution of all automated test cases against CenturyTel’s new AmDocs based back office system. While continuing to provide full coverage of current automated tests, this team also re-engineered the test automation framework in order to provide ease of use, lower maintenance impacts, and to provide more flexibility in utilizing test automation throughout the testing process. This resulted in significant improvements in accuracy of results as well as gains in overall test coverage, while at the same time reducing the time spent in the testing phase. My main responsibilities included the day to day management of the team, the creation of test plans and schedules for the automation team, consulting on the overall testing process, and work as an integral member of the automated test framework design team.

I successfully led two task teams of 6-8 people. Each team was responsible for the creation of process and artifacts in support of Aetna’s Automation Life Cycle Process. My teams were responsible for the Analysis Phase, and the Review Phase. While leading both of those teams I was also responsible for the initial audit of current levels of test coverage. The results where further refined with breakouts of manual versus automated testing procedures. This information led to the creation of an overall Testing Metrics Plan for QA activities. Later I worked on the definition and prototyping of a Test Automation Framework that would allow for repeatable and effective development, maintenance, and execution of test automation. My final role was the Project Lead for the development of a plan to automate the testing of the data warehouse in order to streamline and extend the testing coverage of this critical system.

Responsible for all QA activities associated with Cygent's leading edge eBSS software solutions. These applications featured an (n)tiered architecture utilizing BEA’s Weblogic and an Oracle database. This was a total java shop J2EE, EJBs, XML, and both HTML and JSP’s for content delivery. The applications supported functionality that ranges from order entry and external system interfaces to work flow processing. Our package also featured an administrion console written in SWING. These applications were operated and tested on Unix, NT, and HP UX platforms. Deliverables in this role were to create the infrastructure, processes, and to recruit the resources necessary to implement a structured repeatable process of quality control. I built a high performance team of 11 QA engineers. This team was responsible for both functional and performance & scalability testing of all products and API’s. We used several methods of testing to accomplish these objectives including manual testing (both black and white box), as well as automated testing (using WinRunner and LoadRunner). In the day-to-day execution of our deliverables I managed and performed all aspects of the testing cycle including requirements reviews, design reviews, test planning, test script creation, automation processes, test execution, and defect identification & resolution. Additional responsibilities included strategic planning in coordination with the VP of Product Development, the Directors of Engineering, Product Architecture, Operations, and Technical Documentation, as well as all personnel management tasks for the QA organization.

Managed and directed the QA Testing Team for the NCIS Population Care Registry product. This is a client server based application that gives Practitioners the ability to proactively provide care and treatment for registry members. This application’s back end originally utilized a Sybase database and was converted to an oracle database. The database was updated by external systems utilizing HL7 messages. The front end was a fat client implementation and was written in C++. The application was rolled out across the country from Hawaii to Georgia as part of Kaiser’s NCIS initiative. In this role I was responsible for building a QA organization from scratch as well as the definition and implementation of processes and procedures required to effectively and efficiently test the application. My team tested the initial conversion of the application’s back end from Sybase to Oracle, and performed the continued testing of the application while it was under development. We were also responsible for testing the application as delivered (rolled out) in local regions. Day to day activities included the management of 9 QA Engineers performing Functional, System, and Integration Testing of this product. Responsibilities include the authoring of test plans, creation of Project Work Schedules, risk analysis, and resource management for all QA efforts. In addition I actively coordinated with interdependent functional areas such as requirements, development, architecture, and training teams. Other responsibilities included interfacing with regional resources in an effort to integrate the PCR product into their local regions with complete and mutual understanding of system functionality as well as identifying any dependencies.

Managed the Technical Test Team responsible for the environmental support of all Carrier Access Billing System (CABS) development and testing activities for Bell South. Responsibilities included resource management, scheduling, and budgeting for the team. Interfaced directly with the Functional Testing Managers providing for a seamless availability and transition of resources in order to support simultaneous testing of various functional changes in multiple environments. Worked hand in hand with Development, Requirements, and Functional Testing Managers to create integrated testing plans and schedules. Created and executed an automated regression testing process replacing many of the manual tasks previously associated with this deliverable and reducing the regression testing timeline by 55%.
