About Don Misumi

I've been working in this industry since the early days of biotech and so I have a lot of experience. I started out as a researcher but became interested in automation technology so I switched from the bench to the robot. The many years that I spent doing hands-on molecular biology and assay development enable me to be well-suited to the adaptation of manual assays to a robotic platform. This has been particularly advantageous when young, condescending PhD scientists ask me to automate an assay that they have not properly vetted and believe that I have to acquiesce because I have no understanding of science. I will respond to them in a helpful way to show them the error of their ways as I am not averse to absorbing this kind of abuse. I have a weakness however when I am witness to this self-serving behavior inflicted on others and cannot stay silent. But if you hire me, you will have to take the bad with the good.Specialties: Have worked on multiple liquid handling and robotic platforms: Agilent BioCel, Agilent Vertical Pipettor, Beckman Biomek FX, Dynamic Devices VVP, Tecan Genesis and Freedom Evo, Perkin Elmer Evolution P3, Caliper Sciclone ALH3000, Velocity11 Vprep, Caliper RapidPlate, Cybio Cybiwell(PlateMate). Many years experience as a molecular biologist and in technology development.

  • Misumi
I Eschew Formal Titles That Denote Hierarchy
    Misumi Aug 2023 - Present
    Schaumburg, Illinois, Us
Curiously, although the company bears my name I receive no remuneration. But I am happy to simply spread my brand across the globe. When you think Automation, think MISUMI.
  • Amyris Biotechnologies
    Staff Engineer
    Amyris Biotechnologies Apr 2009 - Aug 2023
    Emeryville, Ca, Us
I dedicated many years of my life to developing automated methods and systems for high throughput screening. My primary personal motivation was to make life easier for the under-compensated scientists who had to produce the work that the privileged and morally compromised took credit for. To this end I used the knowledge gained from my diverse experience in the industry to benefit my exploited co-workers, but had to turn a blind eye to the unintended profit to the company from the resultant increased productivity. Sadly, you have to break eggs to make an omelet. But a better world is possible - and if we all work at growing our community of like-minded people, we can achieve it.This worker advocacy may have had something to do with my being targeted for the layoff but I am not bitter. I appreciate the many years I spent there free from harassment by the Swiss capitalists.
  • Nugen Technologies
    Senior Application Scientist
    Nugen Technologies May 2006 - Apr 2009
    Männedorf, Zh, Ch
Responsible for adapting assay technologies to automation platforms. As a customer facing scientist, I was treated well but I cannot say the same for the hourly employees. They were subjected to abuses by management that led me to leave the company. Ironically, the Swiss company that shut down my workplace when I lived near Boston was the same company that acquired Nugen. Coincidence? Maybe. But I was beginning to suspect that the Swiss capitalists were on to me.
  • Novartis Institute For Biomedical Research
    Scientist Ii
Novartis Institute For Biomedical Research Sep 2005 - May 2006
    Basel, Baselstadt, Ch
Responsible for the automation of cell-based assays in the Oncology Targets and Biomarkers group. Created automated procedures for the testing and validation of shRNA clones. I did not like working for a large Swiss pharmaceutical company but I liked my team and made the most of my brief time there. But California was calling me so I had to leave. Or perhaps the Swiss engineered my departure...
  • Tecan Boston
    Automation Engineer
    Tecan Boston Jan 2005 - Jul 2005
    Männedorf, Zh, Ch
Worked on the automation of a novel microfluidic and 384-well cytochrome P450 assay on the Tecan Freedom Evo. This was a very productive venture cut short by a shutdown of the company by the Swiss parent organization. It was only years later that I became aware that the Swiss capitalists were doggedly pursuing me from one job to another in an attempt to deprive me of employment or make my life miserable. However, ultimately I prevailed.
  • Altana Research Institute
    Senior Research Associate
Altana Research Institute May 2003 - Jan 2005
As one of team of two in the Automation group, responsible for the introduction of automation instrumentation to the company and the design and development of customized applications. The parent company was a large German pharmaceutical that sent a team to the US in order to create a start-up biotech-like venture and bring together an innovative group of US scientists. The idea was to do research in a manner that was less restrictive than was the practice in Germany. Ironically however, they sent Germans trained in this culture to run the company and they just duplicated the practice. Funny. I made fun of them all the time - in a friendly way - and they did not appreciate it at all. I think they were glad to see me go. I liked the German people but they had no sense of humor. They made me laugh though.
  • Millennium Pharmaceuticals
    Research Investigator
    Millennium Pharmaceuticals Feb 1994 - Jan 2003
    Cambridge, Ma, Us
Responsible for working with multiple research groups to improve productivity in high- and medium-throughput gene discovery efforts by evaluating and assessing automation needs and implementing solutions.
  • Cambridge Neuroscience
    Research Associate Ii
    Cambridge Neuroscience 1991 - 1994
Worked on cloning of novel neurotrophic growth factor as part of research effort directed at the identification of genes involved in nerve regeneration. Screened libraries with degenerate oligonucleotides to identify the bovine gene prior to isolating the human homolog. Developed and evaluated DNA constructs to maximize expression and secretion of the gene product.
