Donna Marie Howe, CFA is a recognized expert in building out enterprise risk management frameworks and processes. She has acted as Chief Risk Officer for both buy-side and sell-side firms; at the corporate level and at the divisional level. In her role at Sovereign/Santander Holdings USA, she developed and implemented an approach that integrates enterprise risk management and strategic decision making into the capital management process. This approach uses qualitative and quantitative methods to transparently identify and assess risk and return, incorporating both prudential and non-prudential risk types. The governance process focuses on clear decision rights and the application of effective incentive systems to encourage risk-based decisions.At UBS, she managed the risk of 600+ buy-side firms during the crisis and later acted in an advisory role on the initiative to become a credit derivatives clearing member and enhanced collateral management processes.Operational Risk Management, governance and modeling is a particular expertise of hers. Incorporating idiosyncratic sensitivities and systemic sensitivities using a blend of quantitative and qualitative methods allows for greater transparency of root causes. As well, the process permits optimization of a more robust set of operational risk measures, tailored to the company's specific characteristics.Ms. Howe is a frequent speaker on risk management and contributed to several publications, including an early text on managing interest rate risk.
