Donna Shanor, LCSW-S, LCDC, is a leader in health care and uses a relational, strategic, mission-driven approach. Donna brings over 18 years of experience in social work and serves as the Inaugural Associate Chair of Clinical Integration for the Department of Health Social Work at Dell Medical School and Director of the Integrated Behavioral Health Program at UT Health Austin, Donna amplifies the role of social work in a health care setting by applying a strengths-based, patient-centered lens to health care, cultivating relationships with interdisciplinary members of health care teams, and ensuring social workers are practicing at their highest abilities, fostering innovation and change. Donna considers herself and her team agents of healthcare transformation.Donna is a builder and trailblazer as she leads her team in the first medical school in the country to create a Department of Health Social Work. Donna supports the clinical social workers, dietitians, and PharmD in the Integrated Behavioral Health Program. Donna is a strategic collaborator and has developed strong partnerships with her physician colleagues and other interdisciplinary leaders. As a social worker, her expertise lies in interpreting and translating the medical approach to her social work team and vice versa to healthcare providers in order to facilitate shared understanding of goals on an individual and programmatic level in order to meet the patients’ needs.Donna is a lifetime learner and believes in sharing ideas, knowledge, and experiences to improve and grow as a clinician and as an organization. In 2020, Donna earned her second master’s degree in Health Care Transformation from Dell Medical School & McCombs School of Business. Continuous improvement, growth and being part of the process of culture change (whether with a patient or in an organization) incites energy in Donna’s work. Donna is able to identify opportunities for improvement and offers evidence-based or evidence-informed suggestions to improve. Donna is currently PI and co-lead of the Zero Suicide initiative at UT Health Austin. Donna and leadership identified a gap in safer suicide care and Donna responded with an evidence-based framework to apply along with funding to implement Zero Suicide.Donna is an associate of TEND Academy and has been invited to speak to helping professions on topics related to burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue.
