Technical Support Engineer
This role involves providing our cloud-enabled managed services and trading infrastructure to the international capital markets community. Over 550 firms globally leverage our platform, including many of the most prominent investment banks, hedge funds and exchanges.During my time with the company I have worked in Belfast, New York, Dubai and Singapore. For the past three years I have also been working in Hong Kong, helping to manage the IT infrastructure of our clients in the Asia-Pacific region.
Class Member
The Washington Ireland Program (WIP) inspires and develops promising leaders through an exceptional program committed to building a future of peace and prosperity for Northern Ireland and Ireland. For over two decades WIP has brought together young leaders from a wide range of communities and backgrounds for an outstanding leadership and skills-development program. Each year, WIP selects 30 students to join it’s network of leaders and influencers by completing a 12-month program of service and leadership development, which includes a summer in Washington D.C. or New York City.I feel extremely privileged to have been selected to join the Washington Ireland Program class of 2018, as it proved to be a brilliantly unique and formative experience. During my time in Washington and New York I was granted access to an array of excellent volunteering initiatives, networking opportunities and programs to enhance my leadership, communication and teamwork capabilities. Furthermore, I engaged in weekly debates and discussions with high-profile speakers, many of which focused on foreign policy, international relations and economic issues. The opportunities offered by this program have not stopped there however, as a number of us were also asked to present a paper we wrote in the House of Lords. The topic of said paper was 'The Relationship Between Ireland and the U.K. in 2040'.
Team Lead
In 2018 I was chosen to lead a group of Irish and English volunteers to Miami, to campaign in the US midterm elections. As a group we canvassed thousands of voters using a variety of methods, including knocking on doors, phone banking and attending party rallies. The campaigns we worked for included Debbie Mucarsel-Powell’s successful congressional campaign and Senator Bill Nelson's re-election campaign. As team lead, I had to ensure that our group remained cohesive, arrived to work and events on time and interacted with potential voters in the most effective way possible. I was furthermore responsible for solving any issues or disputes that arose. This experience provided me with a lot of exposure to US politics, and many influential figures that work within it. Aside from those previously mentioned, I also had the chance to meet and attend talks given by former President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and current Vice President Kamala Harris.
Government Affairs Intern
As part of the Washington Ireland Program I completed an internship with the Entertainment Software Association, the trade association of the video game industry in the United States. Based in Washington, it boasts many of the top video game publishers in the world as members. I was placed in the Government Affairs department, which engages policymakers at the national, state and local level on a range of legislative and public policy issues impacting the industry. This position allowed me to conduct research into how the industry is governed, and projects pertaining to current issues in the area. I compiled multiple reports and presentations for senior staff members, and constructed an extensive database detailing information about video games based degrees in American universities. In conjunction with this, I worked closely with the CEO, whilst also being offered the opportunity to attend meetings and events on Capitol Hill with several prominent politicians. To conclude my internship, I was flown to San Diego to run a voter registration drive at Comic-Con.
Banking Advisor
This role involved dealing with a wide variety of banking requests, queries and issues raised by Lloyd's customers. Through this experience I developed a solid understanding of many aspects of the banking world, with responsibilities ranging from dealing with large sums of money and offering financial advice, to handling complaints and customers in financial difficulty. Within my team I was the top performer, answering the most enquiries and resolving the most issues on a daily basis. Furthermore, I was asked to be the liaison between our team and senior management, and therefore had to escalate any official concerns or recommendations.
Intern
This department of the Irish Government is responsible for ensuring that public spending is allocated efficiently and effectively. As an intern I completed a project on the reformation of Government Agencies, with the aim of highlighting areas of overlap and opportunities for streamlining. To achieve this, I undertook extensive research on the structure of the Irish Government and similar foreign governments, whilst also conducting interviews with senior members of the Irish Civil Service. This project subsequently formed the basis of my undergraduate thesis.
Camp Counselor
I spent two summers working in a summer camp in Maine, during which I was responsible for helping to look after a group of thirty 11-year-old boys. In conjunction with this, I had to lead daily activities for large groups of children, ranging from rock climbing to fishing. In my second summer I was granted further responsibilities, which included leading camping and fishing trips in the Maine countryside. Throughout my time at camp I built such a good rapport with my co-counsellors, and the children under my care, that I was flown to New York by the camp’s owner to attend a Christmas reunion.
