I retired from public school administration on July 1, 2019. My next adventures include pursuing a career writing and consulting. I have developed a Creativity Index for schools and districts to use if they would like to see how that measures up to their academic ratings.I led the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts from 2001-2008 and Gov. Brown's Oakland School for the Arts from 2007 through 2016. In 2005, I founded the Academy of Arts and Sciences to give students without prior experience access to the arts.I have taught Educational Administration at SF State, and currently mentor a few young leaders. I have studied leadership and organizational psychology, and could serve as a consultant on special projects. In 2013 I was appointed by Governor Brown to the California Arts Council, where I was elected Chair in 2015. I served 3 one-year stints through January 2018, and now take a seat on the Council through 2020. We distribute a budget of $30+ million statewide in grants, funding arts in prisons, in juvenile justice facilities, for veterans, for schools and for large scale community projects. When I joined in 2013 our total budget was $5 million. I am the father of two talented arts school graduates: writer Gia and percussionist/vocalist Jenna, both happily close by.

Executive And Artistic DirectorOakland School For The Arts Nov 2007 - Jun 2016Oakland, CaliforniaChief Executive Officer and Artistic Director of Arts Charter School serving 750 students from grades 6-12. Responsible for academic curriculum, fund-raising, artistic direction and teaching, hiring staff, developing and monitoring a $9 million budget, working directly with Governor Brown who founded the school in 2002.Created new departments, moved the school into The Fox Theater, developed two annex sites for specialized programs in Music, Visual Art and Theater. We help to anchor the Uptown Oakland arts scene, one of the world's most exciting (NY Times, 2012; Lonely Planet, 2014) places to visit. I see Oakland as the new America -- diverse, economically schizoid, soiled yet elegant -- Oakland is five cities in in one, and it is as rich and surprising as any place on the planet. The school reflects all of that. -
