About Donovan Brewster, Rse

In 1996 I worked my first plant turnaround as a laborer, that led to some time spent insulating piping and vessels. Then, after an ATV accident and some bruised ribs stopped me from pulling wrenches, I worked as a safety watch on a couple shutdowns. That led me to landing a job with Safety Boss doing H2S safety around rigs and in plants, as well as downwind air quality monitoring. Then I began training as a firefighter but was injured badly in an auto accident while responding a gas well blowout in northern B.C. I stayed with a friend and convalesced on Pender Island for a couple years and there was employed as a personal computer technician, pipeline laborer, and then on a sawmill. The owner of the mill, upon discovering I had worked in plants and the oilfields, told me I should get my steamfitter credentials and join the UA 488 in Edmonton, where he had been a member for many years. I followed his advice, and received my Red Seal in April of 2006, and since that time have worked as a steamfitter, rigger, foreman, general foreman, subject matter expert, materials coordinator, and turnaround execution coordinator. I value safety, hard work, attention to detail, and try to further my knowledge and skills with every new situation. Currently I am employed by Seaspan at the Vancouver Shipyards, where I am trying my hand at marine piping during the finishing stages of building a research vessel for the coast guard. It has a lot of the same, and yet a lot of different challenges than the oil and gas industry, and I am enjoying having the opportunity to learn something new every day. When I am not employed, I either travel or spend time working at home on the family farm.
