It’s ok. Very few people actually do. While it is exponentially unlikely to find yourself in a situation where you would ever need any of that information, your flight attendants are trained to handle many emergencies that may arise en-route to your destination. As a United Airlines Flight Attendant, I am trained to handle anything from a 9/11 style terrorist attack to a fire started by a cell phone that gets crushed in the gears of the powered recliner for your business class seat. Anyone can pop open a can of coke or pour a glass of seltzer, but very few people have dedicated months of training to be a type of first responder who can gracefully and professionally handle a security incident, medical emergency or evacuate 300 people from a Boeing 777 in under 90 seconds. While becoming a Flight Attendant takes a special type of person, I wanted to take it a step further. I wanted to be the one that trained and qualified those flight attendants to ensure that they maintained those specialized qualifications. After achieving the minimum of 3 years of service, I pursued and was hired to be an FAA Advanced Qualifications Program Flight Attendant Training Instructor. After an additional two weeks of rigorous training, I qualified as an expert in the field of Inflight Safety and Security and began teaching and evaluating my peers during their annual regulatory qualification training.Additionally, I was chosen to represent United Airlines in Hollywood while filming the safety video that was shown on all video-equipped United flights. I was fortunate to be a part of their great customer service culture for almost 10 years. I was hired as a seasonal temp for the Back to School season in 2005 and worked my way into a permanent role as a part-time associate. Over time, I earned even more responsibility as a Stockroom Manager and learned the logistical side of the day-to-day business. When I left that role to pursue my education and other career opportunities, I loved the culture so much that I stayed active with AEO helping out whenever I could in seasonal capacities in various different locations. In 2013, an Assistant Store Manager position opened up at the store where I was initially hired. The challenge: get the great customer service culture back. My specific role was Talent. I was in charge of keeping the store staffed and trained and ensuring that the right people were working in the right positions. I had to develop great relationships with the employees and facilitate a workplace that they loved clocking in to. Through hard work and very intentional leadership, that great culture that I fell in love with was back and great sales results soon followed. In this role I was essentially the human resources point of contact. I recruited, conducted interviews, made hiring decisions and handled all the legal paperwork processes. While that was my main responsibility, I spent a majority of that time managing on the sales floor and leading by example.
