Current PhD candidate at the University of Calgary studying in the field of clinical neurosciences. Through my education thus far, I have developed a diversified knowledge base that includes, but is not limited to: biomechanics, human anatomy & physiology, solids mechanics, clinical neuroscience, and computer coding. I am very enthusiastic about both clinical and preclinical research, and approach science with a translational lens, modelling common disease/injury states in rodent models to help understand how we can treat them in humans. My current graduate work focuses on using neuroprosthetics, optogenetics, and chemogenetics to restore blood pressure control in both human and rodent models of spinal cord injury under the supervision of Dr. Aaron Phillips. In the future, I plan on pursuing post-doctoral training in genetics to further understand the molecular underpinnings of common diseases/conditions that afflict the population.Outside of academia, I am passionate about volunteering, specifically with individuals who have intellectual disabilities. Over the last 8 years, I have worked with numerous organizations that focus on breaking down the stigma that unfortunately still surrounds the intellectually disabled community. These include: Between Friends, motionball for Special Olympics, and Special Olympics Alberta. In my spare time, I am an avid musician, love to watch movies, and enjoy playing squash and cycling.

Doctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Calgary Feb 2022 - PresentCalgary, Alberta, CanadaThe focus of my thesis work is to better understand and treat hemodynamic instability in both human and rodent models of spinal cord injury. For my human-focused work, I am involved with the ongoing HEMO clinical trial, which uses targeted epidural stimulation of the spinal cord to improve hemodynamic instability following spinal cord injury. This trial is the first in Canada to surgically implant epidural spinal stimulators for the use of blood pressure control. For my preclinical work, I am working towards identifying the specific neuronal subpopulations responsible for blood pressure control at the level of the spinal cord. My work utilizes a combination of neural circuit tracing, viral vector delivery of DREADDs and Opsins, single-cell RNA sequencing, and in-situ hybridization. Identification of these neuronal subpopulations will allow for the targeted activation of neural circuits needed for blood pressure control following spinal cord injury, without simultaneous activation of other untargeted sympathetic circuits (bladder, bowel, etc.). -
Msc Student - Clinical NeruosciencesUniversity Of Calgary Jan 2020 - Jan 2022Calgary, Alberta, CanadaThe focus of my thesis is the use of robotics to better understand and rehabilitate arm function in stroke survivors. Specifically, I am looking at the ipsilesional arm in stroke survivors (often referred to as the "less-affected" arm), and how movement deficits in this arm present and change in the first 6-months following stroke. Ipsilesional deficits were previously overlooked in stroke rehabilitation, often being cited as "insignificantly contributing" to overall motor impairment following stroke. As a result, my work presents an exciting opportunity to provide clinicians with much needed knowledge about these deficits, and how they can be better targeted in the clinic. -

For my project, I completed a retrospective chart review of patients who had received surgical treatment for bilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD). The purpose of this work was to better understand how bilateral RRD presented in the clinic, as it is an extremely rare condition. Additionally, my project sought to determine which surgical repair methods provided the best visual outcomes at one-year post-operation. -
