Profile bio

About Don Preston

At 38 years old, I raced for over 40 hours on the Popcatepetl volcano in Mexico.24-something hours and many obstacles into the event I collapsed on the side of the trail. My heavy pack and severe dehydration pulling me to the ground. As I sat there, staring blankly at the blood from my feet oozing out of the mesh of my shoes, I considered quitting. I still had at least 10 more hours left to complete the race and my body felt completely broken. I had already escaped two very close calls on the cliff and in the river. Nobody would fault me. It was called the "Death Race" after all. Instead, I had a quiet colorfully-worded conversation with myself. Then took a deep breath, stood up and did not stop until I crossed the finish. With over 20 years of experience in IT, I’ve had the privilege of working across the entire technology spectrum—from planning and development to deploying systems in datacenters and leading secure migrations to the cloud. My passion lies in ensuring that technology not only meets functional goals but does so securely, reliably, and efficiently. In my career, I’ve tackled challenges across both traditional and modern methodologies, from old-school waterfall project management to agile Scrum, as well as ITIL and MOF frameworks. I’ve honed my expertise in managing security across the software development lifecycle (SDLC), working with development teams to implement secure design principles and ensuring compliance with rigorous standards.Security isn't just a requirement—it's a mindset. Whether it’s managing cloud migrations, securing complex systems, or leading teams through critical transitions, I bring the same focus and determination I showed in Mexico. I believe in applying that same grit to every obstacle: when faced with a challenge, I adapt, innovate, and overcome. This philosophy applies whether I'm coaching clients through cloud transitions, securing systems, or mentoring teams to follow best practices in secure software development.Currently, I'm focused on driving security initiatives that ensure robust, scalable, and secure architectures that withstand the ever-evolving threat landscape. If you're interested in discussing security, SDLC best practices, or how to stay resilient through the toughest challenges (whether in IT, lacrosse or adventure racing), let’s connect!

Listed skills include Leadership, It Strategy, Team Building, It Operations Management, and 46 others.
