Engineers solve complex problems. Don has dedicated his 25-year career to solving problems that affect us all, including enforcing environmental regulations at the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and being an advocate for industry with the National Biodiesel Board. At the former, Don served leadership roles protecting water quality and public health, while saving millions of dollars by using geographic information systems to target and reduce pollution risks and optimizing the effectiveness or preventative measures.As the Director of Sustainability for the National Biodiesel Board, Don oversaw new areas of scientific research and communicated those findings to broad audiences. Don brought facts to bear on complex policy conversations and relishes opportunities to bridge gaps between disparate viewpoints. Those facts and communication talent helped the biodiesel industry grow 10-fold in volume production and quantify their reduction in greenhouse gases equating to 25 million tons on an annual basis.The conclusions drawn from Don’s landmark research are what excites him most. Businesses that learn to apply these sustainability principles will be leaders of the new economy. Biodiesel is just one example of how solar energy and renewable resources can be used optimally to deliver environmental benefits. However, it will be the economic benefits that propel change and profit for industry.
