I was incarcerated for 7 1/2 years. Before and during my sentence I’ve obtained a plethora amount of skills that would be suitable for most of the companies that I apply for. I’ve been home for 2 1/2 years and my current position at Arby’s is the most decent job that I could find since my release. My background and being deemed a “felon” or “ex-convict” really hinders me from being able to showcase my skills. I am a walking asset to any major company or enterprise. My passion includes IT and Counseling. Since I was a youngster about 12 years old I was always walking around fixing all things electronics. Growing up every time a family member or family friend needed something fixed, they would call on me. As a child, in second grade I was on a middle-schooler reading level. I’ve always had a passion with reading and writing and just learning everything possible that I could learn. I’m a fast learner (that can be verified by any of my past employers). While I was incarcerated I picked up the passion of counseling. I’ve had gentlemen that were serving a sentence along with me and they would have problems with their significant others, etc and they would come seek advice and later tell me that it worked. That have happened a lot during my incarceration and I started to love doing it. My background is at the moment stopping me from pursuing my passions with IT and counseling. I never understood why someone’s past hinders them from moving forward in life. I’ve been home now for 2 1/2 years and I’m still not where I want to be in life. My skills are just goin to waste because I can’t utilize them how I would like to utilize them. I believe employers should realize that it is possible to have an individual(s) on your payroll who has had some trouble in the past, that could be their best worker and bring in the most sales, etc. I’m speaking for the ones who can’t speak… US as individuals with prior convictions, on parole and probation, whatever the case may be, we NEED a chance!!
