As a Pharmacy Technician I am required to perform numerous tasks. This position not only requires patient's prescriptions to be filled in a timely manner, but also requires communication with the patient, other healthcare providers, insurance companies, drug suppliers, coworkers within the pharmacy and within the district, and to other pharmacies when required. Pharmacy Technicians are required to read medical professional handwriting, translate from sig into common language, understand the directions and medication, and ensure that the script is correctly entered into the computer. Pharmacy Technicians are also held accountable for maintaining correct medical records and PHI, obeying HIPAA laws and regulations, and appropriately relaying information in a professional manner to patients. It is a part of the profession to ensure that the patient fully understands their medication and treatment process so that the patient will have the best possible outcome and return to normal functioning as soon as possible. Whenever a medication requires extra counseling, it is the job of the Pharmacy Technician to either notify the Pharmacist, or relay the information to the patient if possible. Those who work in Pharmacy are required to have very trustworthy and honest backgrounds. Pharmacies often carry hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of inventory that is highly desirable and addictive. Pharmacy Technicians must past extensive background checks and training in order to obtain certification.
