About Doris Fleming
WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT that a silly little farm girl who didn't learn to read until second grade would grow up to find immense enjoyment not only in reading but also in writing, editing, and spurring on story-tellers of all ages? My second-grade teacher had to bribe me with singing contests to keep me reading. Then in 4th grade a new dimension was added that CHANGED EVERYTHING for me. The school handed out scribblers to all its students; these were to be used for penmanship practice. I loved penmanship! Not only because I wanted SO badly to learn how to form the letters perfectly, but also because suddenly I possessed a canvas on which to SCRIBBLE the stories that danced around in my head. Of course, my siblings, when they read what I had written, said, "It didn't happen like that!" And so, writing fiction became the outlet for my daydreaming.As for the poetry I write, I credit my dad. He could make a rhyme out of anything. His love of working the words until they "sounded just right" (in all the right places) is something he passed on to me. When it finally comes together, it's the most rewarding sort of feeling. Indescribably satisfying!
