Stahl• Developed catalytic transfer dehydrogenation methods for pharmaceutically relevant (hetero)arenes with well-defined and in-situ prepared heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts using high pressure reactors (e.g. Parr vessels, Multiple Reactor Systems, HP ChemSCAN).• Characterized catalysts, products, and intermediates using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), GC, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS).• Explored the functional group tolerance of successful homogeneous catalysts.• Investigated mechanisms of aerobic palladium catalyzed dehydrogenation for phenols using kinetic orders, isotope effect, labeling, and competition experiments.

Chirik• Explored indenyl zirconium and hafnium catalysts for dinitrogen activation and functionalization, utilizing different ligand substituents and reducing agents. Extensive hands-on air/moisture sensitive organometallic and organic chemistry reaction and purification techniques required. • Investigated mechanisms of ketone addition to isolable, air sensitive zirconocene complexes using in situ Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), 1H, 2H, 11B, 13C, 15N 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies.• Studied N-C bond formation using ansa linked early transition metallocenes.• Developed catalysts for hydrogen storage using amine boranes and investigated mechanisms using kinetic order, gas uptake, and in situ NMR experiments.• Responsible for maintenance of glove boxes, complex vacuum/gas line systems, and FTIR.
