Since 2006, I’ve had a board fall on my head, passed out from dehydration and smacked my skull on our tiled bathroom floor, slipped in a bathtub and hit my noggin on a toilet, and had brain surgery for an aneurysm. All of these resulted in unconsciousness, memory loss, cognitive difficulties, balance problems, dizziness, vision issues, sleeplessness and fatigue. Each one has also helped Weight Watcher’s bottom line, as I always get fat the first year or so after an injury. When I’m feeling better I go back to Weight Watchers to get rid of the blubber. What I’ve experienced are a series of Brain Injuries (BI). The blows to my head were mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). The surgery was an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). So, I know what I’m talking about “from the inside out” when I coach people with BI. I also took, and passed, a “Brain Injury Specialist” course, read extensively on the subject of brains and BI, and attend many seminars. I write and speak to groups about BI, especially regarding prevention, and am ramping up these activities as I heal. In many ways, my BIs have been a gift, as I now know many wonderful people I didn’t know before, and have profound insight into a world that was previously a remote concept. My life and professional experiences have helped me move forward in life in spite of my injuries. My support from my family, especially my husband, my friends and knowledgeable professionals is crucial. My motto? “Never give up!” Show less
